HARLEM RENAISSANCE.

New African American art literature bring new ideas, music, and literature to America due to the Harlem Renaissance beginning in 1920. This was the new beginning of new artists and writers such as Palmer Hayden, and Langston Hughes. Therefore these writers gained major popularity at this time. The scribble technique was soon develpoed by Florence Cane. At the time many therapists used this tecnique, and it was now introduced into the schools in the early twentieth century. This tecnique developed creativity and individuality into the classrooms of the school.

JAZZ

New Orleans was where jazz music was orginated. In the late teens, jazz music spread throughout the country especially in Chicago. Black and white musicians moved to Chicago as more opportunities opened up. Gennett records was an indie company that began recording jazz music which was located in Virgina. The first group they recorded was the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, then followed by King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band with Louis Armstrong. Louis Armstrong was one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. He learned to play cornet. Louis was born in New Orleans.

ART DECO

Art Deco is an artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s. The style influenced all areas of design including architecture and interior design. In 1966 the term Art Deco was used. It had strong colors, and bold geometric shapes as well. In the early 1920, Art Deco was a major style in Europe. It did not become popular in the U.S. until about 1928. 

 

MAJOR LITERARY WORKS AND THEMES

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was an american author of short stories and novels. He was considered one of the best writers of the 20th century. One of the most popular novels he wrote was The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925. This novel takes place following the first world war.

SIGNIFICANT INDIVIDUALS

 

Maxfield Parrish-   was an illustrator, and a famous American painter who was born in Pennsylvania. When Maxfield was younger, he loved to paint. He recieved a degree in fine arts because he studied at Pennsylvania Acadamy, and Dexel Institute of Art. Maxfield is best known for color. He illustrated many different works, and wrote many books. He entered into an artistic career which lasted more than half a century.

 

C. Coles Phillips   was an American illustrator and artist. Clarence attended Kenyon College. While he studied their, his illustrations were published. After attending Kenyon, Clarence moved too New York City where he attended night classes until he eventually discovered his own advertising agency.
