Women In the 1920's

The 1920's was a very important time for women. During this time period, many changes took place such as fashion and womens rights! Women also became more powerful because they started getting more jobs. Before this, women dressed more conservative, but after the war they started wearing shorter and different types of dresses. For the first time in history, women were wearing shorter dresses with pleats, slits, and gathers. Women became more independent and free and it was very blissful for them to see this happening. Also in the 1920's, the 19th ammendment was radified which was extremely important to the women.

The 19th Amendment

It was introduced to congress in 1878 and by 1912, nine western states had adopted woman suffrage legislation. Suffrage is the right to vote. By 1916, all the major suffrage organizations were united behind the goal of an amendment. When New York adopted women's suffrage in 1917 and President's Wilson changed his position to support an amendment in 1918 the political balance began to change. In May of 1919, the House of Representatives passed the 19th amendament and two weeks later the senate followed. On August 26th, 1920, Bainbridge Colby certified the radification of the 19th ammendment.
