What is art deco?

Art Deco is A decorative style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. It had bold geometric shapes with strong colors and was used on objects around the house and architecture. 

 

Art Deco was a movement in decorative arts that also affected architecture. It got its name from a fair held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco was a major style in Europe since the early 1920s. It did not become popular in the U.S. until about 1928.

 

Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was a verry popular American painter and illustrator born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started drawing for his own amusement when he was a child and his parents encouraged his talent. He went to Pennsylvania Academy for a degree in  Fine Arts. By him going to this school it helped make this become the Golden Age of illustration and the future of American visual arts.

 

C. Coles Phillips  (1880 - 1927) Coles studied at Kenyon College in 1902, when  he found an audience for drawing in the school yearbooks. After leaving the college Phillips moved to New York where he took classes in art school before he started his own advertisement agency. In 1907, Phillips met with J.A. Mitchell a  publisher of Life Magazine and he was hired at the young age of 26.

What is the harlem renaissance?

The Harlem Renaissance is the expression of African-American thoughts  and culture. This took place in a new Black community in that was part of Harlem. This was during the early 1920 to1940 and people expressed in forms of art, dance, music, theatre, literature, poetry, and history.

 

What is the differance between Art Deco and The Harlem Reniassance?

Art Deco was limited to architecture and furniture but The Harlem Reniassance had a verity of ways of being expressed.  Art Deco was founded in Europe, particularly in Paris in the year 1925 but The Harlem Reniassance was founded in Harlem, New York in the year 1918. 

 

What is Jazz?

Jazz was popular in America from 1918 to 1929.  In 1918 Jazz was not as popular as it was in 1929 because as time went on, Jazz progressively prospered.  Jazz was recognized in 1918 when World War I ended and it became less popular in 1929 when The Great Depression started.
