What is art deco?

Art Deco is A decorative style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. It had bold geometric shapes with strong colors and was used on objects around the house and architecture.  Art Deco was a movement in decorative arts. It got its name from a fair held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco was a major style in Europe since the early 1920s. It did not become popular in the U.S. until about 1928.

 

Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was a verry popular American painter and illustrator born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He started drawing for his own amusement when he was a child and his parents encouraged his talent. He went to Pennsylvania Academy for a degree in  Fine Arts. By him going to this school it helped make this become the Golden Age of illustration and the future of American visual arts.

 

C. Coles Phillips  (1880 - 1927) Coles studied at Kenyon College in 1902, when  he found an audience for drawing in the school yearbooks. After leaving the college Phillips moved to New York where he took classes in art school before he started his own advertisement agency. In 1907, Phillips met with J.A. Mitchell a  publisher of Life Magazine and he was hired at the young age of 26. 

 

THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

 

What is the harlem renaissance?

The Harlem Renaissance is the expression of African-American thoughts  and culture. This took place in a new Black community in that was part of Harlem. This was during the early 1920 to1940 and people expressed in forms of art, dance, music, theatre, literature, poetry, and history.

 

What is the differance between Art Deco and The Harlem Reniassance?

Art Deco was limited to architecture and furniture but The Harlem Reniassance had a verity of ways of being expressed.  Art Deco was founded in Europe, particularly in Paris in the year 1925 but The Harlem Reniassance was founded in Harlem, New York in the year 1918. 

 

JAZZ

 

What is Jazz?

Jazz was popular in America from 1918 to 1929.  In 1918 Jazz was not as popular as it was in 1929 because as time went on, Jazz progressively prospered.  Jazz was recognized in 1918 when World War I ended and it became less popular in 1929 when The Great Depression started.  

 

Who is Joe "King" Oliver?

Joe "King" Oliver is one of the most famous jazz artists in history. He was raised in New Orleans, the heart of jazz music in the 1920's. The first instrument that Olviver learned to play was the trombone. He soon switched to playing the coronet, an intrument famous for making "hot jazz" sounds. Soon after working with many marching bands in New Orleans, Oliver, nick-named "King" by fellow bandleader Kid Ory, moved to Chicago in 1919 to play with Bill Johnson's Original Creole Orchestra. By 1922, Oliver had formed King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and invited his protege, Louis Armstrong, to join him from New Orleans. As jazz historians would later note, Oliver's band marked a milestone in jazz music, for, in short, the group introduced Amstrong's playing to the world. 

 

Who is Louis Armstrong?

Louis Armstrong is said to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, trumpet and cornet player in history. Armstrong first started playing the cornet before the trumpet. At an early age, Armstrong recieved his first instrument and instruction from his mentor, Joe "King" Oliver. 

By 1922, Armstrong joined the migration North. He moved to Chicago to join Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, but in short time, he left his mentor to establish a prolific, independent career. From New York to Los Angeles, Armstrong worked with a number of preeminent jazz bands and Blues singers. His recordings and show tours marked jazz music's shift from a regionally-rooted art form to a national production.

What is Mein Kampf?

Mein Kampf is an autobiography that was published in 1925.  Mein Kampf is German for my struggle.  This autobiography was written by Adolf Hitler and it talk about his hatred for the Jews.  He also talks about how he thinks that Germany is a superior country.  Outside of Germany, Mein Kampf was not known very well.

 

What Is Winnie the Pooh?

Winnie the Pooh was a cartoon character who was made by a man named Alan Alexander Milne who was better known as A.A. Milne.  Winnie the Pooh started off as a popular book that was published in 1924.  A. A. Milne had a young son who he put in Winnie the Pooh and names Christopher Robin.  Christopher Robin was also in other works of his.
