
Early 1900's- During this time there was an immense number of immigrants migrating to the United States from Asia, particularly China.
1910- Angel Island Immigration Station opens to process and deport Asian Immigrants.
1920- A quota of immigrants per country was set accompanied by other restriction lines on the amount of immigrants allowed in the United States.
1922- Takao Ozawa opens case against the US that would declare Japanese inelligible naturalized citizenship, but ultimately lost. Furthermore, during the Cable Act any American citizen who marries an Asian would lose their citizenship.
1924- The Immigration Act slowed the flow of immigrants to the United States. This act totally excluded Asians from immigration to the U.S. The new act also did not allow Asians who were previously allowed to enter the U.S. into the country especially the Japanese. They were allowed to enter the U.S. before due to a “gentlemen’s agreement” between the two countries. There was already a literacy test in place so most Asians who tried entering would not be able to because they were not literate in English. This prevented many before them to come into the country.
1933- The Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) was formed due to the immense amount of immigrants.
1941- On December 7th, 1941 Japan executed an attack against the naval forces of the United States stationed at Pearl Harbor. They succeeded in sinking five of eight battleship and killing 2,400 United States citizens, Thus, paranoia regarding anyone of Asian heritage grew.
1943- After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, many America's were urging for laws restricting the rights of Asian immigrants. However, in 1943 Congress repealed all laws restricting the rights of Chinese people and allowed them the right to become naturalized citizens of the United States. Furthermore, they set a quota of people from China allowed passage into the United States which allowed 105 immigrants per year.
1944- The Start of the Korematsu versus United States case in which a man named Korematsu protests Asian internment camps.
1945- Japan surrenders after the United States drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
1947-War Brides Act-Enstated in 1945, this act allowed veterans to bring back their brides from alien nations along with their families. This was very important because it was ammended in 1945 to be the first time immigrants could come over despite their race. This meant that Chinese, Japenese, and Filipina spouses could find there way to America. 7,000 brides came over with their soldier husband from China alone through out the 1940s. The War Brides Act played a key role in the biggest wave of immigration since the 1920s.
1986- On November 6th, 1986 the Reform and Control Act was passed to prevent and control illegal immigration into the United States. It checked undocumented aliens, and gave permission for employers who knew their workers were not documented. This act also increased US border enforcement. The INS now required that employers and employees sign a form certifying an employee's identity and eligibility. Employers must pay fines up to $10,000 for every illegal alien they have.
